Teltonika CALYX – Cellular Raspberry Pi HAT for Industrial IoT

As the line between prototyping and production continues to blur, Teltonika Networks has introduced a new concept that bridges both worlds: the CALYX range of cellular Raspberry Pi HATs.

Available in three variants — EBD021 (4G LTE), EBD050 (5G), and EBD070 (5G RedCap) — each version gives the Raspberry Pi a genuine industrial-grade mobile data connection, managed and secured the same way as Teltonika’s RUT-series routers.

Backed by Teltonika’s 25-year heritage in M2M networking, CALYX turns the Raspberry Pi into a dependable IoT edge gateway suitable for CCTV, SCADA, EV charging, environmental monitoring, and smart-retail applications.

Industrial-grade connectivity for Raspberry Pi

Unlike USB modems or hobbyist HATs, CALYX uses proven embedded modem technology derived directly from Teltonika’s industrial router platform. It connects via the Pi’s 40-pin header, draws regulated 5 V DC power.

CALYX EBD021 – 4G LTE Pi HAT

The EBD021 is the entry point to the CALYX family and the ideal choice for most industrial IoT applications. It uses a 4G LTE Cat 4 modem (3GPP Release 9) with download speeds up to 75 Mbps and upload 50 Mbps, while maintaining backward compatibility with 3G and 2G.

Dual SMA antenna ports ensure strong reception, and the compact 56 × 23 × 95 mm housing fits neatly alongside the Raspberry Pi 4 or 5.

Use it for:

  • CCTV/ANPR remote backhaul

  • Environmental or agricultural telemetry

  • Smart-cabinet control and POS failover

  • Temporary WAN links or proof-of-concept sites

The EBD021 balances cost, coverage and reliability — exactly what’s needed in field deployments where uptime matters more than sheer speed.

CALYX EBD050 – 5G Pi HAT

For higher-bandwidth or latency-critical projects, the EBD050 takes things up a level with a 5G NR (Sub-6 GHz) modem, compliant with 3GPP Release 16, capable of up to 2.4 Gbps downlink and 900 Mbps uplink.

It automatically falls back to LTE Cat 19 (up to 1.6 Gbps DL / 200 Mbps UL) when 5G coverage isn’t available.

This version is ideal for:

  • Edge AI video analytics or multi-camera sites

  • Smart factory or industrial automation

  • 5G fail-over WAN for retail, events or broadcast

  • Portable edge compute nodes

The additional throughput and low latency open up a range of high-performance IoT and M2M applications where traditional 4G routers simply can’t keep up.

CALYX EBD070 – 5G RedCap Pi HAT

Sitting neatly between full 5G and LTE, the EBD070 uses the new 5G RedCap (Reduced Capability) modem — 3GPP Release 17 — delivering up to 223 Mbps DL / 123 Mbps UL performance.

RedCap is designed for industrial IoT: lower power draw, reduced complexity and cost, yet with the core benefits of 5G such as low latency and network slicing readiness.

It’s particularly well-suited to:

  • Distributed sensor networks

  • Smart cities and utilities

  • Transport and fleet monitoring

  • Energy and environmental telemetry

With its smaller footprint and industrial operating range (–40 °C to +75 °C), the EBD070 is the ideal forward-looking choice for large-scale, power-sensitive IoT roll-outs.

Built for industry – not just makers

All CALYX variants share the same robust mechanical design, 40-pin GPIO integration, and mounting kit. Each includes:

  • Dual SMA connectors (two on 4G and RedCap, four on 5G EBD050)

  • USB-C interface for data and power

  • Nano SIM slot plus optional eSIM support

  • Status LEDs for power and network indication

They can operate from –40 °C to +75 °C, making them suitable for everything from roadside cabinets to mobile installations.

IoT SIM cards for CALYX connectivity

Every Teltonika CALYX device needs a robust IoT SIM solution. Consumer SIMs simply aren’t designed for 24/7 machine-to-machine connectivity, especially in remote or industrial environments.

Millbeck Communications, a Teltonika Diamond Partner, supplies IoT SIM cards tailored for routers, gateways and edge devices — including:

  • Multi-network roaming SIMs for stronger coverage across EE, O2, Vodafone and Three

  • Private APN SIMs for secure fixed-IP access

  • Dynamic IP SIMs for outbound cloud telemetry

  • eSIM (eUICC) profiles for remote operator switching

  • Private Fixed IP SIMs with VPN access for LAN devices

All plans are built for reliability and ease of use.

Why CALYX matters

By bringing Teltonika’s proven industrial modem technology into the Raspberry Pi ecosystem, CALYX bridges a long-standing gap between development and deployment.
Engineers can now prototype with open-source tools on a Pi — then deploy the exact same hardware into the field. Professional IoT antenna options and hardened cellular connectivity.

For system integrators, smart-retail, industrial IoT, or utilities projects, this means faster rollout, lower risk, and a direct upgrade path from concept to production.
